Another Day at Disneyland

Has Disneyland lost its lustre? I think so. When Holly was small, we had annual family passes and went to the park at least 20 times a year. We never got tired of it….sometimes we’d just go on a Friday evening for dinner, perhaps a ride or two and the fireworks. Other times, we’d get there when it opened and stay until it closed. But the last few times we’ve visited the park we have all been thoroughly disappointed. It just doesn’t seem special any longer. California Adventure, with one notable exception - the ride called “Soarin’ Over California” - is a complete and utter waste of prime real estate. And as for Disneyland itself, the park used to be kept immaculately clean - you were quite literally followed around by someone with a broom and dustpan on the off-chance you might drop something. Now, while it is still probably cleaner than most amusement parks, it just doesn’t sparkle in quite the same way. Another thing that really bothers me is that as recently as ten years ago, the streets inside the park were filled with quaint little shops where everything from antiques to Indian turquoise jewellery could be bought at reasonable prices. While there are still plenty of shops, you’d be very hard-pressed to find an item in any of them that is not tied to a Disney character. Merchandising heaven for corporate Disney. And while I realize that times change and prices go up, $7.75 for hot dog and bag of chips seems a bit pricey, particularly after having paid the exorbitant admission price and the additional charge to park your car. The one thing that hasn’t changed are the immaculate flower beds scattered throughout the park. It’s the one last vestige of pure Disney. All I can say is that Walt must surely be turning over in his grave. In my humble opinion, the magic kingdom has lost a huge chunk of its magic.
